'Seom' and 'De battre mon cœur s'est arrêté'

I have spent this evening watching two films - both very different.

I decided to watch 'Seom ' (The Isle) after seeing another film by the same director, Kim ki-duk which was called 'Bad Guy'. Both South Korean films are somewhat disturbing,  although Bad Guy not so much at The Isle. I really wasn't sure what to expect with this film (although I was warned by MatthewRudy), despite the clear common themes of prostitution and strong, deranged and silent main characters. Certainly do not watch The Isle whilst eating your dinner, it certainly put me off fishing for life and also at times - off my chocolate raisins! I did enjoy the film, it was however not as good as Bad Guy and I did have to actually look away at certain points. The acting from both Seo Jeong and Kim Yu-seok was convincing to say the least.

The second film - not South Korean, but French which I did not enjoy so much on the language front. The pretentiousness of the characters in 'De battre mon cœur s'est arrêté ' (The Beat that My Heart Skipped) came across as being there
because they were French not because the characters were actually pretentious. And although I
only speak pigeon French there were clear mistranslations in the subtitles which made the language
appear to be more polite than it is. Despite my issues with the language, it was an OK film, I
enjoyed the main character and his journey with the piano, but I think they could have made
more of some things and less of others. I do however probably only think that because after the
bizarre world of 'The Isle' I was in need of a pleasant love affair and not some splattered brain matter
decorating a man's wall.
